About this Podcast
HOST: Welcome to our podcast! Today, I'm excited to have Dr. Jane Smith, an expert in humanitarian aid communication, joining us. She's here to discuss a new course she's teaching, the Graduate Certificate in Humanitarian Aid Communication Planning. Welcome, Jane! GUEST: Thanks for having me! I'm looking forward to sharing some insights about this exciting new program. HOST: Terrific! To start, could you tell us about your personal experiences that led you to create this course? GUEST: Of course. Throughout my career, I've seen firsthand how crucial effective communication is in humanitarian crises. I wanted to create a program that would equip professionals with the skills they need to make a real difference. HOST: That's wonderful. And what current industry trends do you think are most relevant to this course? GUEST: There's a growing recognition of the importance of strategic communication in humanitarian work. With social media and other digital tools, there are more opportunities than ever to reach and engage audiences. But it also means there's more noise to cut through, so being strategic is essential. HOST: That's true. Now, what challenges have you faced in teaching this subject, or that your students might face while learning? GUEST: One challenge is helping students understand the real-world implications of their decisions. We address this by using case studies and simulations based on actual crises. It's a hands-on way for students to see how their choices play out in practice. HOST: That sounds like a great approach. Finally, where do you see the future of humanitarian aid communication going? GUEST: I believe we'll continue to see more emphasis on two-way communication, listening as much as speaking. It's not just about getting a message out but also understanding the needs, perspectives, and even cultural nuances of the communities we're trying to help. HOST: Thank you so much for joining us today, Dr. Smith. It's been fascinating to learn more about the Graduate Certificate in Humanitarian Aid Communication Planning. I'm sure our listeners have enjoyed it too! GUEST: Thank you for having me! It's been a pleasure.
