About this Podcast

HOST: Welcome to our podcast, today we're talking with Dr. Sofia Reyes, an expert in food justice and the lead instructor for the Advanced Certificate in Food Justice Advocacy and Activism. Dr. Reyes, can you tell us a bit about your personal experiences that led you to this work? GUEST: Absolutely, I grew up in a food desert and saw firsthand how limited access to healthy food affects communities. This sparked my passion for food justice and advocacy. HOST: That's powerful. Now, what current trends are you seeing in the food justice field that are relevant to your course? GUEST: There's growing interest in urban agriculture, school garden programs, and policy changes to support equitable food systems. Our course covers these topics and more. HOST: Great! Now, what challenges have you faced or observed in teaching this subject? GUEST: One challenge is helping students understand the complexity of the food system and how interconnected it is with other social issues. We address this through interdisciplinary coursework. HOST: Interesting. Wrapping up, what do you envision for the future of food justice? GUEST: I believe we'll see more grassroots initiatives, collaboration between sectors, and policy advancements to create a more just and sustainable food system. HOST: Dr. Reyes, thank you for sharing your insights and giving us a glimpse into the Advanced Certificate in Food Justice Advocacy and Activism. It's clear that this course will empower learners to become catalysts for change. GUEST: Thank you for having me. It's been a pleasure.
