About this Podcast
HOST: Welcome to our podcast, today we're joined by Dr. Jane Smith, a leading expert in nutritional psychiatry. She's here to discuss her new course, "Certified Specialist Programme in Nutritional Psychiatry for Bone Health." Dr. Smith, can you tell us what inspired you to create this program? GUEST: Absolutely, I've seen a growing need for healthcare professionals to understand the connection between nutrition and mental health, particularly when it comes to bone health. It's an area that's often overlooked but can have significant impacts on patient outcomes. HOST: That's fascinating. Can you share any personal experiences or insights that have shaped your perspective on this topic? GUEST: Certainly. I've worked with many patients who were unaware of how their dietary choices were affecting their mood and bone integrity. Once they made simple changes to their diets, we saw improvements in both their mental wellness and skeletal strength. HOST: It's amazing how much of an impact diet can have. What current trends are you seeing in nutritional psychiatry, especially related to bone health? GUEST: There's a lot of research right now about the role of specific nutrients, like vitamin D and calcium, in supporting mental wellness and bone integrity. We're also seeing more emphasis on holistic approaches to mental health, which includes nutrition. HOST: Speaking of challenges, what are some obstacles you've faced or anticipate others facing when learning or teaching this subject? GUEST: One challenge is breaking through the traditional biomedical model that often separates mental and physical health. Another is helping professionals find practical ways to apply this knowledge in their practice. HOST: That's a great point. Lastly, where do you see the future of nutritional psychiatry heading, especially in relation to bone health? GUEST: I believe we'll continue to see more integration of nutrition into mental health care. As we learn more about the gut-brain axis and its impact on mental health, I expect nutrition will play an even bigger role in treating various mental health conditions. HOST: Dr. Smith, thank you so much for joining us today and sharing your insights about the "Certified Specialist Programme in Nutritional Psychiatry for Bone Health." We're excited to see how this field continues to evolve and improve patient outcomes. GUEST: Thank you for having me. It's been a pleasure.
