About this Podcast

HOST: Welcome to our podcast, today I'm thrilled to be talking with Dr. Jane Green, an expert in Biophilic Design and the lead instructor for the new course "Graduate Certificate in Biophilic Design for Urban Gardens". Dr. Green, could you please share a bit about your experience and what drew you to this field? GUEST: Of course, I've been working as a landscape architect for over 20 years, and I became fascinated with how urban spaces can be designed to foster a stronger connection between people and nature. Biophilic design is at the heart of this approach. HOST: It's a fascinating subject. Could you tell us about some current trends in biophilic design, especially as they relate to urban gardens? GUEST: Absolutely, one trend is the increasing use of native plants and wildlife-friendly features to promote biodiversity. Another is the focus on creating multi-sensory experiences, incorporating elements like water features, natural scents, and textured materials. HOST: Those sound like wonderful ways to bring nature into the city. But there must be challenges in implementing these ideas. What are some obstacles you've encountered or anticipate students facing? GUEST: Space constraints and budget limitations are common challenges. Also, there's often a need to educate stakeholders about the benefits of biophilic design, as it's still a relatively new concept in urban planning. HOST: That's insightful. Looking forward, where do you see the future of biophilic design going, particularly in the context of urban gardening? GUEST: I believe we'll see more integration of technology, such as smart irrigation systems and green roofs. There's also growing interest in community gardens and collective green spaces, which can have profound social and environmental impacts. HOST: Dr. Green, thank you so much for sharing your insights and giving us a glimpse into the "Graduate Certificate in Biophilic Design for Urban Gardens". It's clear that this course offers a unique opportunity to contribute to greener, healthier cities. GUEST: Thank you for having me. It's been a pleasure discussing this important topic with you.
